What is the Sports Medicine Model and who uses it? The sports medicine model is a well researched practice that uses active patient participation and progressive, goal-oriented exercises as a way to treat injuries and prevent future problems. Exercise prescription, which makes use of this model, can be used on its own or combined with soft tissue work and hands-on treatment to achieve decreased pain, better function and/or improved performance. To assist in creating a suitable exercise program, Ottawa Osteopathy & Sports Therapy offers personalized Functional Movement Screen (FMS) testing with our Certified Strength and Conditioning Consultant, Elsbeth Vaino. What is FMS? The FMS is a system which identifies your specific muscle imbalances and dysfunctional movement patterns. This system also highlights movement limitations and asymmetries. During the initial FMS testing session, you will be screened using the Functional Movement Screen Score. This scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns. Based on your results, a corrective exercise program will be prepared, taking into account your personal schedule, available exercise equipment, and program goals. A follow-up appointment is scheduled to review the results of your FMS assessment and provide you with your personalized exercise program, complete with images and descriptions. The exercises will be explained in-depth, with each exercise being demonstrated, carried out, and corrected to ensure proper form.
